NO VACANCY PRESENTS: [22ND JULY 2010]
3 x 2D

“We have struggled to find our own method of creating a space rather than relying on our own self.”
-Jiro Yoshihara, The Gutai Manifesto (1956)

3 x 2D brings together the practices of 3 artists whose work shifts between manifesting idea structures (thinking) and investigating optical perception (seeing). Taking on an experiential beat into ‘The Adventures of the Aesthetic’ 3 x 2D is in part, an anachronistic survey of art theory and aesthetics. Focusing on the latter half of the 20th century, particularly the 60’s this show seeks to flatten and dissolve distinctions between modern and post-modern, concept and object, video and sculpture and ultimately define the alchemical truth-value in nature & future.

The three artists presented in this exhibition, whilst having due regard for historical discourse are nevertheless inclined to go their own way. Much of what is important and informative in the exhibition stems from the artists’ very personal attitudes and beliefs. Presenting works in video, neon, silicon, collage and various constructions the artists play with references to a variety of modernisms, yet subvert its purity with baroque interpretations of the mundane and a sharp political subtext.

‘Modern technology (in peace and war) defoliates and lays waste to the natural world---this exhibition shows you how to fight back with a resilient, vital garden “Concept’ of your own.’
Hogan, Klerks & Briggs . 2010

Biographies

Jesse Hogan completed an Honours Bachelor of Fine Arts at Sydney College of the Arts in 2004.  Since then he has had solo exhibitions at Phatspace 2005, China Heights 2007, Until Never 2008 and Black & Blue Galleryin 2009. Hogan challenges a number of art systems to create installations where competing styles and theories are seemingly played off against one another, referring to his work as ‘Post- Something’ or now ‘UHU’.  His recent works have included   materials such as video, neon, silicon castings, painting, language, collage and situational performance. Hogan currently lives and works in The Blue Mountains, Australia.

Louise Klerks graduated at Sydney College of the Arts in 2005. She completed her Honours Degree in Sculpture, Performance and Installation art. Since then Klerks has completed a Diploma of Secondary Education at The University Of Melbourne. Her particular interests include illustration, performance art and public interventions. For Klerks, 3 x 2D explores hypnogogic visions produced by the state of being between wakefulness and sleep. Hypnogogia is known to produce weird and artistic insights that are familiar to those produced by consuming psychoactive substances. Klerks has used super 8 video footage and craft techniques to create installations that are inspired by the Surrealist movement and psychedelic art and music from the 1960’s. Klerks now lives and works in Melbourne, Australia where she illustrates local band posters, curates group exhibitions and runs the life drawing classes at No Vacancy Gallery.

Nick Briggs studied communication design at RMIT before shifting his focus to collage and assemblage art. By reusing and reincarnating images from the found to the constructed he feels a sense of relief in being able to present to you what he refers to as ‘mental vomit’. It is through this thought and practice of ‘mental vomit’ that he offers to you his critique and seemingly his thoughts on religion and its place in art.  Nick lives ands works in Melbourne.
