Suburban Haunts is an exhibition about home. It’s about isolation, anxiety, whimsy, curiosity, and finding the bizarre amidst the banal. It’s an experiment in free-range creation: spanning photography, installation, scale miniatures, sculpture, and textiles.
In this timely new exhibition, Melbourne-based artist JB Knibbs considers the uncanny – where the familiar becomes unfamiliar, the homely unhomely, and the boundaries of reality blurred – within the home and the suburbs. Coming after a year of spending more time in our homes than ever before, Suburban Haunts mirrors this period of contemplating how we live, where home fits within safety or disquiet, and how home becomes a repository for the self.
Some of the featured work was created during Melbourne’s extended lockdown, using repetition to express the sense of unclaimed time. This exhibition provides a view into Knibbs’s intensely personal way of looking at the world and allows you to see the ordinary become extraordinary.
