First Year

28th June - 9th July 2022

‘First Year' explores the unsung stories of parenthood through ordinary activities such as meal times and laundry folding. This body of work traces the hands of a young child, unintentionally creating a mess through her bold touches, making sense of her surrounding world. A stormy tablecloth, wrinkled garments, crushed fruits, burning candles and firmly-gripped utensils illustrate moments that are both chaotic and magical, ordinary and poetic.

MeiMei Hodgkinson is an emerging Chinese Australian artist who currently lives and works in Naarm (Melbourne). She has been playing with oil paints since she was three years old and retains that childlike sense of joy, imagination and vulnerability in her art today. She tries to show wonder and her sense of humour through the use of thick brushstrokes, sun-soaked colour palette and bold graphic works. MeiMei's paintings are often inspired by unseen or hidden parts of life, seeking to articulate the magic within the mundane.
