Kohl Tyler-Dunshea is an NZ born, Melbourne based artist with a practice that ranges from watercolour painting to installation and photography.

Kohl is drawn to moments of phenomena in the natural world, such as a lunar eclipse or a flowerhead’s ability to sense the sun. She holds the belief that plants can harbour histories, and that one is able to learn about the place they occupy through studying the flora around them.

Her painting methodology is influenced by old-world Naturalists and Botanists, she collects then presses many of the species depicted in her work. Using the pressings as a reference to paint from, they’re then stored in an archive akin to one in a herbarium. She also paints from life and from her own photography. Kohl uses masking films and tapes to layer circular washes and bring diagrammatic elements to her paintings.

Kohl has exhibited in both commercial and artist-run spaces in Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia since graduating from Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design in 2016. She was the first-place recipient of the Estuary Art and Ecology Prize in 2017. Her work is held in private collections in New Zealand, Australia and the United States and has been featured in Eyecontact, Viva, and The Sunday Herald NZ.
