MARCH TO ART- PLACE 2021.jpg

Opening Tuesday 6 April 2021, ANVAM’s highly anticipated exhibition for the ongoing March to Art Series focuses on the theme of PLACE. Following the previous year’s themes of Identity, Community and Narratives, participating veteran artists and their families will exhibit digital imagery and video works that showcase interpretations of this PLACE and its significance to veteran artists’ experiences.

Curator, Bruce Copland explains, ‘PLACE explores veterans’ interpretations of ‘Somewhere lived, encountered, remembered or imagined.’ Once again, the veteran community has shown its diversity and creativity in this exhibition, which also grounds us in the importance of PLACE to our individual and collective wellbeing.’

EXHIBITION HOURS

Mon - Wed / 10 - 4pm

Thurs - Fri / 11 - 5pm

Sat - Sun / 1 - 4pm

PROGRAM OF EVENTS

Sat 10 April | Author Talk - Maria Augustus-Dunn | 2 - 3pm

“Write what you know” is Maria Augustus-Dunn’s mantra. With this in mind, she wrote her first book Married Quarter – Boots, Berets and Bloody Uniforms in 2016 which detailed her 21 years as a military spouse. Married Quarter is a glimpse into the world of military families who endure postings, deployments, long periods of separation and often loneliness.

A diagnosis of a benign brain tumour in 2008 turned her life upside down and forced some pretty serious issues. It was time to rethink life. What was important? Was it time to think about retirement? After many postings, it was time to think about life after the military. What would it look like?

Sun 11 April | Live Music - Cate Taylor | 2 - 3pm

Cate Taylor is an alt-folk/country artist from Melbourne. Her songs are delivered in a rich, vocal performance of poetic story telling, reflecting social, personal and environmental themes.

Taylor launched her debut, studio album, Red Dirt in March 2020, which features some of Melbourne’s finest musicians together on a strong and moving collection of songs.

Wed 21 April | Artist Talk - Kat Rae | 12.30 - 1.30pm

Place & Coming home - Kat Rae is a veteran artist and BA Fine Arts printmaking student. In a relaxed conversation Kat discusses her photography featured in March to Art : Place - 6 April - 25 April at No Vacancy Gallery, and her most recent studio practices including exploring printmaking processes and techniques.
