CIRCLING INFINITY

Despa Hondros

14-26th March

Despa Hondros’ work draws on natural forms to create abstract images. She works with pencil on paper to translate the subtlety and detail of these forms into her art. In the selection of work made for this exhibition, Hondros’ intention is that you will see the thousands of individual elements that make up the whole image and that you will experience a sense of contemplation and tranquility.

Hondros has traced a particular trajectory in drawing, working from a pared down repertoire of elemental forms – circles and lines – which she methodically repeats within the visual field.  The viewer’s attention is drawn to these repeated forms, where one image can be made up of tens of thousands of marks representing an atom or particle of the subject. Effects of movement, depth of tone and contrast are created by the intensely detailed repetition of the marks, experienced at both retinal and psychological levels.

Despa's drawings have been shortlisted in a number of art prizes including Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing; Hutchins Art Prize; National Works on Paper Art Prize and the Waterhouse Natural Science Art prize.
