No Vacancy presents the debut solo exhibition of Inyoung Lee - ‘Looking Through You, I See Myself’, showcasing the first complete series of tapestries he has created.
Inyoung Lee was born in Goyang city, South Korea in 1996. Inspired by traditional weaving artisans of the Joseon Dynasty he creates modern tapestries that combine a lofty sense of whimsy with historical artistic references.
Inyoung trained under master weaver, Professor Soojin Cha, who is part of the new-age school of art in Seoul that has seen South Korea emerge as an artistic powerhouse during the 21st century.
At the Kaywon University of Art and Design, Inyoung developed his embroidery skills experimenting with a range of fabrics and materials.
Since leaving Korea in 2020, Inyoung has been on a journey exploring the Australian landscape and reflecting those experiences in his art.
Working at a chemical refinery in Townsville, QLD, then at an abattoir in Goulburn, NSW, Inyoung has developed a style of embroidery that seeks to ground itself in true-lived experiences of working migrants in Australia.
