Instruments of Life A solo exhibition by Daniel Kotsimbos 18-22 November 2019 Exhibition event: Friday 22 Nov, 6-8pm. All welcome!

Instruments of Life consists of a rotating ceiling lamp (Ocelli), and an interactive television (OLED).

This exhibition is an investigation into our primal familiarity with technology.

Ocelli is a single servo-motor mounted to the ceiling attached to two standard light fittings, one with an ultraviolet globe and another with an anti-insect yellow globe. The work will be rotating slowly and powered by a wall outlet. Acting as a bridge between technology and the natural world, this work incorporates two distinctly different frequencies of light in motion: one that attracts organic life, while the other repels. Consequently, the space will be perpetually shifting, slowly animating the architecture and anyone who is lured into its luminescence. This will be positioned centrally in the main gallery space.

OLED is a television screen wired up to an infrared proximity sensor and electromagnetic microphone. The screen will emit a blue light and a soft sound of its own electrical frequency being picked up by the electromagnetic microphone. There will be a small infrared proximity sensor positioned just above the screen, which will be programmed to switch off the entire work when it detects motion within a certain distance from the work. Hence, unlike technological convention, the screen instigates the human interaction, acting as an analogous lens in which we are perpetually lured into a refraction of the modern world. This will be on a floor stand, positioned near the cafe in the smaller gallery space.
