NATALIE STEER
Currently on show part of Top Shelf: an in-house curated space for small artworks, rotated monthly.
Head in The Clouds embodies the essence of summer daydreams — the feeling of lying on the grass or floating in water, gazing up at the sky. It captures that fleeting moment of closing your eyes on a sunlit day and watching ephemeral shapes move across your eyelids. In these four abstract pieces, form, color, and texture are layered instinctively, creating a fluid shift in perspective. The works invite an exploration of how we perceive the air holding the warmth of summer, or a morning storm capturing the subtle aura that envelops us during these spaces in time.
Natalie Steer is a self-taught artist based in Victoria’s Alpine Region. Her abstract, transcendental paintings fuse symbology, folklore, and natural elements. Steer’s process is marked by a layering technique, where some areas remain underworked, with translucent oil glazes revealing subtle details beneath, while other sections are built up with a buttery texture of oil and wax giving the work a tactile quality. Blending contemporary ideas with retro influences, her intuitive work evokes both calm and tension, exploring colour and form in dynamic, surprising ways.
